What Device Management Means for You

Summary

Learn how NCU manages university computers with Microsoft Intune and JAMF, what that lets IT do, and what it means for your privacy.

Body

NCU computers are managed by the Office of Innovation & Technology using Microsoft Intune (Windows) and JAMF (Mac). Here's what that means for you.

What device management does

  • Installs and updates software, and keeps Windows and macOS current
  • Keeps the computer encrypted with BitLocker or FileVault
  • Applies security settings, like screen lock and antivirus
  • Lets you install approved software yourself from Software Center (Windows) or Self Service (Mac)
  • Lets IT help you remotely, and lock or erase a computer that's lost or stolen

What IT can see

Management tools show IT information about the computer, like its name, model, operating system, installed software, and whether it meets security settings. They aren't used to watch what you do day to day.

NCU computers and accounts aren't private. The Acceptable Use of Information Technology policy explains when NCU may access information on university systems.

Why you can't change some settings

Some settings are locked to keep every NCU computer secure. If one gets in the way of your work, submit a request and IT will help.
