Learn what technology you'll need as a North Central University student: a recent Windows or Mac computer, a webcam and microphone for class participation, and a stable internet connection if you study off campus.
Computer recommendations
A laptop purchased in the last three to four years is the right starting point for most students. A mid-range Windows laptop or a MacBook Air handles coursework, Canvas, and Microsoft 365 without issue. Either option below will serve you well.

Chromebooks are not recommended
North Central does not recommend Chromebooks or other ChromeOS-based devices for coursework. Many of the applications and tools used in NCU courses aren't supported on ChromeOS. Choose a Windows or Mac computer instead.
Audiovisual production
For students in the Audiovisual Production program, or anyone taking audio or video production classes.
This isn't a requirement. Classrooms provide MacBook Pros with the software you need for class.
If you want to run software like Adobe Creative Cloud (especially Premiere Pro), Logic Pro, Pro Tools, or Ableton Live on your own laptop, plan for more than the standard recommendation:

Before you buy

Skip the printer
NCU provides printing across campus, including mobile printing. Personal printers can't connect to the university network.

Prohibited devices
Not permitted on the NCU network
Devices that extend, modify, or interfere with the university network are prohibited, including wireless routers, gateways, and access points; wired routers or gateways; and any device that changes or disrupts network traffic.
