Signs something is wrong

  • Files you can't open, or files with strange new names.
  • A message demanding payment to get your files back.
  • Pop-ups, new toolbars, or programs you didn't install.
  • Your computer suddenly running much slower than usual.
  • Friends or coworkers getting messages from you that you didn't send.

If you think you're infected

1

Disconnect

Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable. Don't turn the computer off unless IT asks you to.

2

Stop using it

Don't open more files or sign in to other accounts on that device.

3

Report it right away

Submit a request through Report Information Security Incidents or call the IT Service Desk at 612.343.4170, or visit Miller Hall 226.

Never pay a ransom

Paying doesn't guarantee you'll get your files back. Contact IT instead.
