Can I Use a Wireless Printer on Campus?

Summary

Personal wireless printers won't work on NCU Wi-Fi. Learn why, and how to print from your own printer with a USB cable instead.

Body

Bringing a printer to campus? Personal wireless printers won't work over NCU Wi-Fi. Here's why, and what to do instead.

Wireless printing won't work

Your computer and your printer can't see each other on NCU-Secure or NCU-Guest, so wireless and AirPrint printing won't work, even if the printer joins the Wi-Fi. Registering the printer at devices.northcentral.edu won't fix this.

Why

To keep everyone's devices safe, NCU Wi-Fi keeps devices from connecting directly to each other. That stops strangers from reaching your laptop, but it also means a computer can't find a printer on the network.

What to do instead

  • Use a USB cable. Connect the printer straight to your computer. Most printers include a USB port, though the cable may be sold separately.
  • Buy a printer that works by cable. If you're shopping, make sure it has a USB connection.
