VHS and VCRs

Learn how to play DVDs in NCU classrooms and what to do with VHS tapes, including finding replacements through the library and streaming options.

VHS is not supported

NCU classrooms no longer have VCRs, and the Office of Innovation & Technology can't play or convert VHS tapes. VCRs are no longer made and can't be repaired. If you use a VHS title in a course, see Replacing VHS content.

Playing a DVD

Borrow a USB DVD drive
Use your own laptop
Check one out from the IT Service Desk in Miller Hall 226 and plug it into the classroom computer or your laptop. Pick it up before class, not during.
If your laptop has a DVD drive, connect it to the classroom display and play the disc from there.

Replacing VHS content

Start with the library

The library can help you:

  • Find a replacement in its streaming or physical media collections.
  • Request a purchase if the title is available on DVD. Department and library approval may be required.
  • Check whether converting is allowed. Converting a tape to another format usually requires the copyright holder's permission, which is rarely granted.

Check streaming services

Your title may be officially available to stream. On sites like YouTube, make sure the video was posted by the copyright owner. All copying and showing of media in class must follow copyright law.
