Public vs Private Teams: Who Can See and Join

Every team in Microsoft Teams is either public or private. The setting decides who at North Central University can find the team and join it.

Public team
Private team
Who can find it
Anyone with an NCU account
Only its members
Who can join
Anyone with an NCU account, no approval needed
Only people an owner adds or approves
Who can see files and posts
Anyone who joins
Only members

Students are in the same Microsoft 365 as employees

Anyone with an NCU account includes every student. For department work, or anything that isn't meant for the whole university, make the team private.

People outside NCU can't see either kind of team unless an owner adds them as a guest. See How To: Add a Guest to a Team.

Change a team's privacy

1

Open the team

In Teams, find the team, select More options (…) next to its name, then Edit team.

2

Choose Privacy

Select Public or Private, then save. Only team owners can do this.
