How To: Use Tags to Mention a Group in Teams

Tags let you reach a group of people in a team, like “advisors” or “front desk,” without typing each name. When you @mention a tag in a channel, everyone with that tag gets a notification.

Create a tag

1

Hover over the team, then select More options (…) > Manage tags.

2

Create a tag, give it a name and a description, and add the team members who should have it.

Team owners create and manage tags. Members can too, if an owner allows it. Owners turn this on under More options (…) > Manage team > Settings > @mentions.

Mention a tag in a channel

1

In a channel conversation, type @ and the tag name.

2

Select the tag from the list, then send your message.

Everyone with the tag gets a notification in Activity.

Start a chat with a tag

1

Select New message.

2

In the To field, type the tag name and select it. Everyone with the tag is added.

3

Write your message and send it.

Can’t create a tag?

If you don’t see Manage tags, or can’t create one, you may not be a team owner, or members may not be allowed to create tags in that team. Ask a team owner.
