How To: Start a Chat or Group Chat in Teams

Learn how to start a chat with one person or a group in Microsoft Teams.

Start a new chat

Select Chat, then New chat (the pencil icon).

Add people

Type names in the To field. Add more than one for a group chat.

Send your message

Type and press Enter. For a group chat, select Add group name to name it.

Group chats aren't shared folders

Files shared in a chat are stored in the sender's OneDrive. For ongoing work or files others will need later, use a team channel. See Standard, Private, and Shared Channels in Teams.
