Keep OneDrive files online only
Your Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders sync with OneDrive. On Windows, right-click a folder or file and choose Free up space. On a Mac, Control-click it in Finder and choose Remove Download. The files stay in OneDrive and download again when you open them.

Clean out Downloads
Delete installers and files you no longer need from your Downloads folder.

3
|
Empty the Recycle Bin or Trash
Deleted files still use space until you empty it.

|
Turn on automatic cleanup
On Windows, turn on Storage Sense on the Storage page. On a Mac, use the recommendations on the Storage page.
|
Don't delete system files
Only remove your own files. Deleting Windows, macOS, or program folders can stop your computer from working.
Files that are online only need an internet connection to open. To keep a file on your computer, see How To: Use OneDrive Files Offline.
