Creating, Archiving, and Deleting Teams

Summary

Learn how to create a team in Microsoft Teams, and how owners archive or delete a team when its work is done.

Body

Anyone at NCU can create a team, and teams don't expire on their own. That means owners need to close them down when the work is done. Here's how to create, archive, and delete a team.

In this article

Before you create a team

  • Check whether a team for this already exists. A new channel in an existing team is often better than a new team.
  • Give it a clear name so people can find it, like “Registrar Office” or “Fall Welcome Week 2026.”
  • Add at least two owners, so the team isn't stuck if one person leaves NCU.

Create a team

In Teams, select Teams > + (Create or join) > Create team. Name it, choose who can join, and add members.

When the work is done

Option
What happens
Best when
Archive
The team becomes read-only. Everything stays, and an owner can restore it later.
A finished project or a past year you may need to look back at
Delete
The team, its channels, chats, and files are removed.
You're sure no one needs anything in it
1

Find the team

Select Teams, then point to the team name and select More options (…).

2

Archive or delete

Choose Archive team or Delete team, and confirm. If you don't see them, select Manage team first. Only owners can do this.

Save what you need before deleting

Download or move any files people still need first. Deleted teams can only be recovered for a short time, and only by IT.
