How To: Record Your Screen on Windows or Mac

Need to show someone how to do something, or record a quick demo? Windows and Mac both have screen recording built in. Here's how to use it.

Windows 11: Snipping Tool

1

Open Snipping Tool

Select Start and type Snipping Tool.

2

Switch to Record

Select the video camera icon, then New.

3

Pick an area and start

Drag to select what to record, then select Start. Select Stop when you're done.

4

Save it

Recent versions save recordings to Videos > Screen Recordings. If yours doesn't, select Save.

Mac

1

Press Cmd + Shift + 5

A toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen.

2

Choose what to record

Select Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. To include your voice, select Options and pick a microphone.

3

Record and stop

Select Record. When you're done, select the Stop button in the menu bar. The recording saves to your Desktop.

Saving the recording to OneDrive makes it easy to share with a link instead of a large attachment. See How To: Share a File Securely from Teams or OneDrive.
