Learn about the technology you'll need as a North Central University student. Most courses require a reliable laptop or desktop computer — a recent Windows PC or Mac works well for the vast majority of programs. You'll also want a webcam and microphone for class participation, and a stable internet connection if you're taking courses online or studying off campus.
Computer Recommendations
A laptop purchased in the last three to four years is the right starting point for most students. A mid-range Windows laptop or a MacBook Air handles coursework, Canvas, and Microsoft 365 without issue. We recommend using Chrome as your browser for Canvas and other course tools.
If you're choosing between the two options below, either will serve you well. The Mac configurations listed reflect current Apple models; for Windows, look for a recent purchase with a mid-range or better processor rather than focusing on a specific chip generation.
Windows Laptop
- OS: Windows 11 (Home, Pro, Education, or Enterprise)
- Processor: Intel Core i5 (11th Gen or newer) or AMD Ryzen 5 — look for a computer purchased in the last three to four years
- Memory: 16 GB RAM
- Storage: 512 GB SSD
- Display: 13" or larger, 1920×1080 or better
- Security: Windows Defender (built in) is sufficient — no additional antivirus purchase needed

Mac Laptop
- OS: macOS Sequoia or newer
- Recommended model: MacBook Air 13" (M3)
- Processor: Apple M3 chip (or newer M-series)
- Memory: 16 GB unified memory
- Storage: 512 GB SSD
- Display: 13.6" Liquid Retina or larger

Peripherals
A few additional items make a real difference for participating in coursework, especially for programs with live sessions, group work, or online office hours.
- Webcam — integrated or external. Required for courses with live video participation.
- Headset or headphones with microphone — wired or Bluetooth. Reduces background noise and improves audio quality for everyone in the session.
- Accidental damage coverage — if purchasing new, a 3–4 year warranty with accidental damage protection is worth considering.
Internet & Connectivity
If you're taking online courses or studying off campus, a reliable internet connection matters most when your coursework involves live video — class sessions, office hours, or group calls.
- Minimum recommended speed: 3 Mbps for live video participation. For courses without live sessions, a slower connection is workable, though file downloads may take longer.
- No home connection? Many public libraries offer free Wi-Fi. If you're near a University of Minnesota campus or regional center, their public hotspots may also be an option.
- On campus: Connect to the NCU wireless network. See Smart Devices and the University Network for supported devices and connection guidance.
What We Don't Recommend
Microsoft 365 is included — don't buy it
All NCU students have access to Microsoft 365 at no cost. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and more — on up to five devices.
See Download and Install Microsoft Office for Free for instructions, or stop by the IT Service Desk when you arrive on campus and we'll get you set up.
These are not recommended for students
- Chromebooks — North Central does not recommend a Chromebook as your primary computer. Some course tools and software may not be fully supported on Chrome OS.
- Personal printers — NCU provides printing in student-accessible locations across campus, including mobile printing. The IT Service Desk does not support personal printers, and they cannot connect to the university network for wireless printing.
Prohibited Devices
The following devices are not permitted on the NCU network
Devices that attempt to extend, modify, or interfere with the university network are prohibited. This includes:
- Wireless routers, gateways, and access points
- Wired routers or gateways
- Any device that augments, modifies, or disrupts network traffic on the NCU network
