Traveling Outside the US with Technology

Learn what to do before you travel outside the United States so you can still sign in to NCU email, Teams, and other NCU apps while you're away.

Request a travel exception first

NCU blocks employee sign-ins to NCU apps from outside the US. To sign in while you're abroad, request a temporary exception before you leave.

1

Submit the request

Submit the MFA International Travel Exception request. Include where you're going and your travel dates.

2

Wait for confirmation

IT sets up the exception for your dates. This request isn't travel approval; it only lets you sign in.

No exceptions for some countries.

Sign-ins from countries with high cybersecurity risk are blocked with no exceptions. These currently include China, North Korea, and Russia.

Before you leave

  • ☐ Make sure Microsoft Authenticator works on the phone you're bringing.
  • ☐ Pack chargers and any plug adapters you need.
  • ☐ Save the files you need to OneDrive so you can reach them from anywhere.
  • ☐ Save the IT Service Desk number: 612.343.4170.

While you're away

  • No cell service? Authenticator still works when your phone is on Wi-Fi.
  • Keep your laptop and phone with you. Don't leave them in a car or checked bag.
  • Avoid public or hotel computers. If you have to use one, use a private or incognito window, don't download files, sign out of everything, and clear the browser history when you're done.
  • Lost or stolen device? Report it right away. See How To: Report a Lost or Stolen Device.
