Learn how to spot a fake “virus detected” or “your computer is locked” pop-up in your web browser, how to close it, and what to do if you already called the number.
It's a scam
A web page can't scan your computer for viruses. Microsoft, Apple, and NCU IT will never show a pop-up asking you to call a phone number.
Signs it's fake
- A loud alarm or a voice telling you not to close the page
- A full-screen warning that says your computer is infected or locked
- A phone number for “Microsoft Support” or “Apple Support”
- Pressure to act right now, or to pay or give someone remote access
