Domain Name Services (DNS) is the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. DNS servers maintain a directory of domain names (e.g northcentral.edu) and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (e.g 137.207.71.196). This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access websites based on IP addresses. This service also provides a corresponding reverse lookup function to map IP addresses back to their respective names.
Other than IP addresses, the most common types of DNS records include SMTP mail exchangers (MX), name servers (NS), pointers for reverse DNS lookups (PTR), and domain name aliases (CNAME). IT provides support for additions, removal or changes to the North Central University Domain Name Service (DNS).
Requests for subdomains (e.g., something.northcentral.edu) may be subject to extensive reviews and require sufficient justification.
