How To: Move Microsoft Authenticator to a New Phone

Tags mfa

Getting a new phone? Move Microsoft Authenticator for your NCU account before you reset or trade in your old one. It takes about 5 minutes, and it's the easiest way to avoid getting locked out.

Do this before you switch phones

Authenticator doesn't move your NCU account to a new phone on its own, even if you restore from a backup. If you wipe or trade in your old phone first, you won't be able to sign in until IT resets your MFA.

Move Authenticator to your new phone

You need both phones, and a computer or the new phone's web browser.

1

Install Authenticator on the new phone

Download Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store or Google Play.

2

Open your security info

On a computer, go to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and sign in with your NCU account. Approve the request on your old phone.

3

Add the new phone

Select Add sign-in method > Microsoft Authenticator > Add, then Next until you see a QR code.

4

Scan the code

On the new phone, open Authenticator, tap + > Work or school account > Scan QR code, and scan the code on your screen.

5

Approve the test

Approve the test notification on the new phone, then select Next.

6

Make it the default

Next to Default sign-in method, select Change and pick the Authenticator app on your new phone.

7

Remove the old phone

In the list, find the old phone's Microsoft Authenticator entry and select Delete. Now it's safe to reset your old phone.

Test it first. Sign out of something, like Outlook on the web, and sign back in using only the new phone before you wipe the old one.
