How do I take a screenshot on my Windows device?

Overview

Learn how to take various types of screenshots on your Windows device. Screenshots can often assist the IT Service Desk in troubleshooting user issues.

Taking Screenshots

Taking a screenshot of the entire screen

  1. Press the Print Screen button on your keyboard. This will send an image to the clipboard.
  2. Paste the screenshot into a program such as Word or Paint by open new/existing document and hitting CTRL-V.  Alternatively, you can also right-click where you want to paste the image and select Paste from the context menu.

Taking a screenshot of a single window / application

  1. Select the application you want to screenshot
  2. Paste the screenshot into a program such as Word or Paint by open new/existing document and hitting CTRL-V.  Alternatively, you can also right-click where you want to paste the image and select Paste from the context menu.

Taking a screenshot of a portion of the screen

  1. Click the Start button and type snipping in the search box.
  2. Select Snipping Tool from the list.
  3. Using your mouse, left-click and drag across the desired area of your screen, and then release.
  4. A window will open displaying your screenshot.
  5. Click one of the buttons on the toolbar to either SaveCopy or Email your screenshot.
