Your MFA will need to be reset before you can set up the new phone.

Learn how to move Microsoft Authenticator to a new phone, including adding the new phone to your NCU account and removing the old one.

Why your old phone matters

Your MFA is tied to the Authenticator app on your current phone. To add a new phone, you sign in and approve with the old one. Without the old phone, you can't do this yourself.

Add the new phone first, then remove the old one. Don't delete the old phone from your account until the new one is working.

Restoring from a backup doesn't move your NCU account

Even if Authenticator shows your NCU account after you transfer or restore your phone, it won't approve sign-ins. You still need to follow these steps.

Add your new phone

1

On your new phone, install Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).

2

On your computer, go to mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and sign in. Approve the sign-in on your old phone.

3

Select Add sign-in method, choose Microsoft Authenticator, then select Next until a QR code appears.

4

On your new phone, open Authenticator and tap Add account (or +), then Work or school account, then Scan a QR code. Allow camera and notification access if asked.

5

Scan the QR code on your computer screen, then select Next on your computer.

6

A test number appears on your computer. Enter that number in Authenticator on your new phone to approve it.

Remove your old phone

7

Back on the Security info page, you'll see two Microsoft Authenticator entries. Find the one showing your old phone's name and select Delete, then confirm.

8

Your new phone is now your only MFA device. You can reset, trade in, or recycle your old phone.
