Working Remotely

Learn how working remotely at NCU works, what to set up before your first day away from campus, and which tools are available to you from anywhere.

Most things just work

Working from home at NCU looks a lot like working on campus. Your files live in Microsoft Teams, your web-based tools are in Skyline, and email works in any browser. None of it requires special setup.

The main exception is Colleague. If you use Colleague, you'll need the VPN and NetPC, covered below.

Before your first remote day

Check these while you're still on campus

  1. Teams: Sign in on the device you'll use at home and confirm you can open your team's files.
  2. Phone: Make sure calls to your NCU number ring in Teams on the computer or phone you'll use.
  3. Colleague users: Connect to the VPN and test a NetPC session.
Problems are faster to fix in person. If something doesn't work, contact the IT Service Desk before you leave.

Your office phone

Your NCU phone number runs through Microsoft Teams, including desk phones, which run Teams themselves. Calls ring wherever you're signed in to Teams, so if the Teams app is on your computer or phone, calls follow you home.

If you've set calls to ring only your desk phone, change your call settings to ring the Teams app on your computer or phone while you're away. Switch it back when you return.

If you use Colleague

Colleague and the files that come with it, such as reports and extracts, live on the campus network. To reach them from home, you'll use two tools together.

VPN (GlobalProtect)
NetPC

Connects your device to the campus network so NetPC and other network resources are reachable from home. GlobalProtect is already installed on NCU computers.

Using a personal device? Install GlobalProtect

Accessing NetPC

Note: NetPC can take up to 5 minutes to connect. Wait for the session to finish loading before trying again.

Getting help

IT Service Desk

For immediate help, call 612.343.4170. For anything else, submit a ticket.

Remote support

If a technician needs to see or control your screen, they'll connect in one of these ways.

IT only starts a remote session after you've contacted the IT Service Desk. Never let anyone connect to your computer from a call or message you didn't start.
